The Sharpening Box

The sharpening box will change how you think of sharpening 180°
— literally. The tool is mounted on the angle block and the stone is moved over the tool. This ‘upside down’ method has many advantages.

U.S. Patent # 7,387,5

Our new IMPROVED VERSION of the sharpening box now has a cam clamp for securing the tool and a setting block for setting the height. Together these two things make removing the tool and resetting it quick and precise. The setting gauge has 4 sides that are milled progressively deeper on the bottom, so the honing angle becomes .2° more on each side. This is very effective on your final honing to make sure you are reaching the edge every time.

Much shorter stones can be used very effectively this way. A 4″ x 2″ is plenty big. Note that the scale can be set easily to 1° increments. The flatness of the stone is also not as critical because you can move the stone over the tool sideways, circular, or back and forth. Notice that it is no problem honing such a short butt chisel, and that it references on the chisels flat side. Also, you will be able to see the bevel being formed.

Scrapers can be honed by using the two side workstops. Set the scraper just slightly above the edge, and use a file or stone to remake the edge. A diamond stone works particulary well for the initial work.

The box makes an excellent place to store your stones or strop blocks to keep them from getting contaminated by shop dust
