Wood choices for 'Blum' Planes

Mesquite: This is our featured wood for planes. Mesquite is heavy, hard, beautiful, and very stable. It is one of the only woods where the ratio of tangential to radial shrinkage approaches 1:1.

Quartersawn Hard Maple: This is used for the soles of the cherry and walnut planes.  It is a very dense and hardwearing wood. 

Jatoba: The hardest and heaviest wood we offer. Used for the soles of the mesquite block planes, this wood wears like steel and is very stable.

Black Walnut: Used for the infill planes and also the bench planes. A beautiful American hardwood.

Cherry:  Used for the block plane and bench plane bodies. A premier American hardwood.

Custom Woods: Since our planes are all handmade, we have the ability to use a wood of your choice or even make a plane out of wood that you supply. Just call for details.
