Infill Planes

When I first started making my wooden planes, I remember saying to myself that this design would make a good infill-style plane. Now I know I was right! I am offering the planes with 2 different side materials:  stainless steel and brass. All the soles are 1/4″ steel. These are all precision surface ground precisely flat. The infill wood is your choice of mesquite or black walnut.

The Blum infill planes are unique in that the infill does not fit tight to to sides. They are about 1/64″ shy on each side, so the wood is free to expand and contract without constantly putting pressure on the sides.There are steel pins going through the infill which do fit tightly and these are joined to the sides like the bottom is. The infill is pinned to these cross pins in the middle, so the expansion and contraction happens equally on each side.

The working parts of the planes are identical to the wooden Blum planes, so all the accessories and options interchange. You will need to choose from a couple of options when ordering or as always, feel free to give me a call to discuss them.

Description

For the steel and stainless steel, the sides are 10 gauge and the sole is 1/4″. The brass sides are 1/8″.

The infill wood is mesquite or black walnut  in all of them. We really like mesquite as a plane wood, both for its beauty and also for the fact that it has one of the lowest volumetric shrinkage numbers of any wood in the world, which is what you need for an infill wood.

The working parts of the planes are identical to the wooden Blum planes, so all the accessories and options interchange.
